The building’s historic bungalow facade dates to 1918, while a modern addition, developed by architect Mark Appleton, seamlessly makes the two structures seem as if they were always one.

Though Hotel 850 SVB is not large, it has a perfectly crafted sense of flow and a creative doubling of space that makes it feel much larger. Here, a welcoming reception area also serves as an intimate lounge and wine bar, with vibrant art-filled walls and comfortable furniture. Perfect for relaxing, the living room also features a communal wood table where guests work for the day or conduct small meetings. The al fresco roof deck, quite simply, awes with an outdoor fireplace and stunning views of the city.

Interior design Rita Konig

Well-known English interior designer and journalist, Rita Konig uses original artwork, hardwood floors, luxury linens, and marble bathrooms with Waterworks fixtures as a canvas upon which to create her “undone” yet chic and timeless look.

Italian brass lamps and crystal sconces cast yellow light on cane-covered walls, creating a warm, home-like atmosphere not found in traditional hotels. Guided by her affinity for Southern California’s sun, Konig uses a color palette that adds light and warmth to the vintage pieces she’s carefully chosen from London and LA. Custom-made sofas, weathered leather armchairs, and bookshelves filled with hardcover classics augment private fireplaces and outdoor terraces with al fresco dining areas.
