Milan’s historical and cultural center—Centro Storico, in Zone 1—is a close-knit network of narrow streets that shelters an abundance of art galleries, showcasing everything from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Here, too, one finds square-side cafés and restaurants and a world of high-end fashion and shopping, particularly in the Quadrilatero d'Oro (The Golden Rectangle). Aside from the world-famous Duomo di Milano (set in the Piazza del Duomo)—a late Gothic cathedral which took 600 years to complete—the Centro Storico boasts an array of historical and cultural attractions. These include gorgeous Renaissance churches and basilicas, such as the San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore and Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore; museums and galleries, such as the Brera Art Gallery and Royal Palace; and the Castello Sforzesco castle and courtyard, which is home to several art museums.
